THE BRIEF

H.H. Smith were awarded the project at Smithills School to Install 12 zoned heating plants throughout the upper school. The works included demolition, building works, mechanical services, electrical works and decorations. Also included was the decommissioning and removal of the existing boiler plant and HWS storage cylinders in the main boiler house inclusive of all pipework, controls and electrical wiring. Additional refurbishment works were awarded covering 3 phased work areas incorporating DDA works, groundworks & general refurbishments. Leading on from the initial works, an additional £400k further works including pupil toilet refurbishment and new build swimming changing facilities were undertaken.

KEY POINTS

Whenever possible the existing heating installation had to be left running whilst the new heating zones were being installed. The switch over had to be phased and managed to ensure a constant service. The internal design of the toilet blocks & wash troughs were designed by H.H. Smith to maximise the efficiency of the facilities.

CHALLENGES

All 12 zones were located at various sites throughout the School buildings resulting in traffic management. Areas of major footfall needed changes & updates to appropriate hoarding, security and house keeping on a continual basis. Storage and material handling was a constant challenge requiring robust delivery scheduling, careful planning and material management to ensure the project was cost effectively managed.
