KEY POINTS
Undertaking the 6th project at the college is a major achievement for H.H. Smith as it demonstrates the continual high standard of delivery, our customer service, ability to collaborate and quality output. Disruption and disturbance to the school’s activities is a major challenge which through careful planning and collaboration is minimised. Out of hours security is provided to protect the open buildings during the build.
CHALLENGES
Site access is a major challenge as access is gained to the school up narrow streets with restricted shared access. Other entrance users are building occupants, college deliveries and college waste collections. Access is to be maintained at all times to the operational college and daily meetings take place between the college manager and site manager to agree time slots for building deliveries and cut ins to minimise any disruption to the college’s activities. Additionally, construction works are scheduled to fit around exams and term requirements. A further challenge is the limited space on site to accommodate material storage and the lack of a turning space on site restricts material deliveries. Robust scheduling is required to ensure materials are available as needed and sub contractors have to be fully informed so their programme is unaffected.
