THE BRIEF
After a competitive tender process, H.H. Smith were awarded the project to carry out alterations to the existing RTC Building at Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Training Centre to create new Ablutions, Classroom and Gym. The works comprised of the stripping out of some existing facilities and the construction of a mezzanine floor in a two-storey space, equipping the ground floor with additional toilet and shower facilities and the first floor with the BA Classroom, Gym and Kit Store. The contract also included some ancillary external works and associated drainage and services alterations.
KEY POINTS
The internal works required the erection of a new steel structure to support the mezzanine floor. The new accommodation was formed using lightweight studwork partitioning with new suspended ceilings, decorative floor finishes and sanitaryware installations. The installation was supported by M&E and public health services systems including water supply, ventilation, heating/cooling, power, lighting and waste water drainage.
CHALLENGES
Both seasoned firefighters and new recruits undertook their training on site throughout the project and the training centre was also open to the public, with local schools visiting the site regularly. Therefore, robust planning and programming was essential to accommodate all of these activities. Additional groundworks were also undertaken ,which were outside of our site boundaries, which meant careful consideration was needed to ensure no disruption was caused to the day-to-day activities of the training complex.
